DGES WORLD FAMOUS FOOTY TIPPING COMP tipster THE DON was honoured in the latest edition of the ‘BOMBER’ magazine. THE DON amongst several other Essendon Members are part of the 50 continuous years membership club. (THE DON has actually been a member for over 60 years – he thinks he signed up in 1945).
He has seen many great Essendon moments, including the 1946, 1949, 1950, 1962, 1965, 1984, 1985, 1993 and 2000 premierships, including several runners up.
THE DON believes that the 1950 premiership team was the best of all time although he concedes that the 1984-85 sides would have given them a fair run for their money. While it is impossible to compare eras, he believes that given the same training facilities and conditions etc, the 1950 side was the better outfit. This side boasted stars such as Bill Hutchison, Dick Reynolds, John Coleman, Norm McDonald, Bluey McClure, Bill Brittingham and many other stars.
THE DON has seen many champions play the game at both Essendon and with the other clubs. His favorite Essendon player of all time was Billy Hutchison. ‘Hutchy’ played 290 games for Essendon between 1942 and 1957. He played in four Premiership sides, 10 Grand Finals and captained Essendon 122 times. He won seven club best and fairest awards in that time and two Brownlow Medals.
Hutchy should have won three Brownlow Medals — equalling the great Dick Reynolds – but in 1955 he lost by one vote to Fred Goldsmith. Incredibly Goldsmith received three votes in a game against Essendon despite having nine goals kicked on him.
At one stage, THE DON had seen several hundred games in a row. It was only when the game became national that he started missing his beloved Bombers live although he still sits glued to the TV with the front door locked and the phone off the hook when the Dons are playing interstate. In all of those years, THE DON has seen some great champions but he still believes that Alex Jesaulenko is the best player he has ever seen.
Well done to DGES WORLD FAMOUS FOOTY TIPPING COMP tipster, THE DON.
